Antonio Mercero - Virtual museum

El tesoro looks at the conflict between a group of archaeologists and a whole town. The former have made a big discovery in the town of Gamones. But the locals are behaving as if the discovery is theirs and violently defend their treasure. This is a tug-of-war between ‘small-town folk’ and ‘urbanites’.

The film is based on the book by Miguel Delibes. Mercero had initially refused to accept the project, believing that it wasn’t suitable for adapting to film. But when Horacio Valcárcel adapted the screenplay, Antonio Mercero accepted to direct it. However, on reading the reviews of its premiere, we see that Mercero was accused of “lacking faith and strength”, having failed to produce a good film.
