La guerra de papá 1977
Based on the book by Miguel Delibes, El Príncipe Destronado, while it enjoyed enormous success on its release, the film failed to subsequently achieve the recognition it deserved due to being qualified by the press as partisan. These were the years of the Spanish transition and the hegemonic media were working to silence any content related to the Franco era.
The story narrates everyday life in the home of a little boy from whom all attention is turned on the arrival of his baby sister and the difficulties he suffers trying to get used to being second best. The film is set in the post-war years and the main plot also features the relationship between winners and losers. The father takes sides with Franco’s supporters and provides the main element for development of the plot: his authoritarianism with respect to the other members of the family, the mother’s impotence in the face of her husband’s chauvinistic conduct, the children’s fear of their father’s behaviour... Fear gradually grips the protagonist (Lolo García) in regard to several aspects of life, such as death, war or the dark.
