El pueblo sumergido 1983
El pueblo sumergido was a work of rather limited repercussion. Furthermore, as affirmed by many critics in publications of the time, it is a hugely dense film because it addresses many of Antonio Mercero’s core values and principles. The central plot is the community life of a group of neighbours and the importance of historical memory on healthy coexistence.
The story is set in a town flooded to build a reservoir. The local administration forces the inhabitants to leave their houses and move, using the argument of being obliged to build a giant hydraulic infrastructure. Although the new town has more resources and services than its predecessor, the inhabitants see it as nothing but a series of houses with no identity. A place of residence with no soul. To recover the essence of the past, they come up with a plan to retrieve the bell from the old church tower. But it won’t be easy, and they’ll have to come up with all sorts of ploys to give the new town some kind of character.
